Then he falls for a sweet girl named Alice. Suddenly, everything that can go wrong, does. Most of these troubles spring from Gilbert's old rival, whose pranks begin to border on criminal.

The conflict leads Gilbert to uncover a local land development conspiracy around which even deeper troubles center. These include a friend being blackmailed and the looming loss of Alice as well as the family farm. Gilbert scrambles to fix everything but unseemly bad luck always causes his schemes to fail.

When all seems doomed an act of selflessness earns Gilbert a new experience: triumph and closure. Though he lost dearly, he comes away believing he at least learned the truth. But the true ending only comes three years later after Gilbert returns home from a combat tour in Vietnam that included a devastating "chance" encounter with his old rival.

A demoralized Gilbert, when confronted by someone he once cared deeply about, is stunned to find that he'd gotten it all wrong and things had never been exactly what they'd seemed.
