The local police have already arrested a suspect, but Bella is convinced tha Scotland Yard's Superintendent Masters and Inspector Green are spending a rare weekend with their wives in the West Country visiting Master's formidable mother-in-law, Bella Bartholomew, when she casually informs them that her elderly neighbor and fiance, Haydn Prior, has just been oddly murdered. The local police have already arrested a suspect, but Bella is convinced that he is innocent and prompts her son-in-law and his colleagues to undertake an unofficial undercover investigation.
